Finally broke down and opened the case. Had to get a flashlight and a magnifying glass to see the audio chipset. Lo and behold, in the PCI slot corner of the board is a **tiny** ALC662 chip. At least I know what I’m fighting now.
I have the installation down to a science now. I know how to walk through the disk utilities at light speed without even looking at the interface. Actually, I have the machine on a KVM. I can make a selection and switch to my blog without waiting for the screen to update. I might even try it with the monitor turned off.
I grow weary of installation. Miles to go before I sleep. Miles to go…before…
