Updating the Transformer TF700T Infinity to KitKat (Android 4.4.4)

August 11th, 2014 · Linux, Videography

I found a neat little app in the Google Play store that would allow me to remote control my Canon EOS 6D DSLR in both still and video modes. That was wonderful, because I had an Asus tablet laying around that looked like an awesome remote viewer.
This is how all my time-wasting projects start. With an idea that’s supposed to take 5 minutes to implement.
The problems started when I looked at the tablet. No USB. So I picked up a dongle from Ebay. Here’s a link to the same thing on Amazon. Well, now I had to find some USB drivers that would let me hook the thing up. After some general Googling, I find out that the drivers are included with Android 4.4.4 (KitKat). No problem, time to upgrade anyway.
So I followed these instructions. That left my tablet in a continuous reboot loop.
After some digging, I found out that I also needed to update the bootloader. I did this by downgrading my recovery image (Team Win Recovery Project) to this version that has an embedded boot loader.
That did the trick. I was able to use that specific version of twrp (Team Win Recovery Project) to load any further boot images that I wanted. As of this writing, I’m running CROMBi-KK version of KitKat Android 4.4.4. This works far better than the stock ROM on this device, and uses a lot less battery for some reason.
I’ll post a video to Guys with Gear on Youtube at some point, showing how this remote viewer works. Spoiler: It’s awesome.
